What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is exposure therapy that contains traumatic experiences through a therapeutic relationship. Art therapy uses art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork as a therapeutic and healing process. Much more than creating works, art therapists help clients - young, old and in-between - be able to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem. All sessions follow the therapeutic process of assessment, goal-setting, treatment, and evaluation. The process is grounded in the knowledge of human development, psychological theories and counseling techniques.
